Cubs-Marlins Game 1 highlights: Marlins defeat Cubs 5-1
The Cubs are one loss from elimination from the playoffs.

The Cubs and Marlins kept it close early in the game, but Miami blew the game open in the seventh inning, scoring five runs on a pair of home runs in their 5-1 victory in Game 1 of the wild card series at Wrigley Field.
Starter Kyle Hendricks gave up a three-run homer to Corey Dickerson in the seventh, and reliever Jeremy Jeffress gave up a two-run shot to Jesus Aguilar.
The Cubs took an early lead off of Ian Happ’s solo home run in the fifth inning.
Here are some highlights from the game:
Ninth inning: Marlins 5. Cubs 1
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: Brandon Kintzler comes in to close the game, and gives up a leadoff double to Willson Contreras. Jason Heyward then pops out for the first out of the inning. Javy Baez struck out for the second out. Victor Caratini flew out to center to end the game.
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: Dan Winkler is now pitching for the Cubs. Starling Marte leads off the inning for the Marlins and is hit in the hand on the third pitch. Monte Harrison runs for Marte, but the Marlins are unable to get anyone across the plate. The Cubs are down to their final three outs.
Eighth inning: Marlins 5, Cubs 1
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: With Yimi Garcia now pitching for Miami, the Cubs go down 1-2-3.
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: Jon Berti walks and steals second base. The Cubs make a challenge, but the original call is upheld. Berti advances to third on a wild pitch. With two outs and a man on third, Andrew Chafin comes in from the Cubs bullpen to replace Tepera. Chafin gets Corey Dickerson to ground out to end the inning.
Cubs pitching change: Ryan Tepera comes in for Jeremy Jeffress.
Seventh inning: Marlins 5, Cubs 1
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: Marlins reliever Richard Bleier replaced starter Sandy Alcantara after Jason Kipnis drew a two-out walk. The inning ends when Kipnis is forced at second on an Ian Happ grounder.
Marlins 5, Cubs 1: Corey Dickerson smashes a three-run homer to give the Marlins the lead. Manager David Ross takes Kyle Hendricks out of the game and brings in Jeremy Jeffress from the bullpen. Jesus Aguilar hits a two-run homer off Jeffress to extend Miami’s lead.
Defensive moves by the Cubs: Ian Happ moves from center field to left field and Billy Hamilton replaces Kyle Schwarber and is playing center and batting fourth.
Sixth inning: Cubs 1, Marlins 0
Cubs 1, Marlins 0: Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch with two out, but otherwise were quiet.
Cubs 1, Marlins 0: Starling Marte doubles to open the inning, and Garrett Cooper drew a two-out walk. But Matt Joyce flew out to Ian Happ in center to end the inning.
Fifth inning: Cubs 1, Marlins 0
Cubs 1, Marlins 0: Ian Happ hits a solo homer with two outs to left to give the Cubs the lead.
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Kyle Hendricks hit Jon Berti to start the inning. Berti then stole second base. Miguel Rojas was safe at first after a high throw from Javy Baez. Baez was charged with an error, but Berti stayed at second. Chad Wallach hit into a double play, Berti out at third and Rojas advancing to second. Rojas advanced to third on a passed ball. Corey Dickerson grounded out to third to end the inning.

Fourth inning: Cubs 0, Marlins 0
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Kyle Schwarber walked to open the inning, After Wilson Contreras popped up, Jason Heyward hit into what should have been a double play, but Schwarber was called out at second and Heyward was safe at first on an error by by Marlins second baseman Jon Berti. But Javy Baez popped out to end the inning.
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: The Marlins’ Jesus Aguilar opened with a double to left field and moved to third on a sacrifice by Brian Anderson. But Garrett Cooper and Matt Joyce grounded out to end the threat.
Third inning: Cubs 0, Marlins 0
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Alcantara gave up a single to Happ, but the Cubs are unable to get anything going.
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Hendricks gave up a walk to Corey Dickerson, but otherwise the Marlins couldn’t do any damage.
Second inning: Cubs 0, Marlins 0
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Kyle Schwarber drew a lead-off walk and Javy Baez hit a two-out single, but the Cubs couldn’t score.
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: The Marlins’ Matt Joyce got a two-out walk, otherwise no damage for the Cubs.
First inning: Cubs 0, Marlins 0
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara put down the Cubs as Ian Happ grounded out, Anthony Rizzo struck out and Kris Bryant flied out to end the inning.
Cubs 0, Marlins 0: Kyle Hendricks puts down the Marlins 1-2-3 in the top of the inning.
Before the game
The Cubs return to the Major League Baseball playoffs Wednesday afternoon with Game 1 of the National League wild card round against the Miami Marlins. The Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks will face the Marlins’ right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara.
Though the Cubs missed the postseason last year, they have a ton more October experience than the Marlins, who are in the playoffs for the first time since they won the World Series in 2003 (and encountered a guy named Bartman along the way).
Despite the gap in experience, the Cubs said they will not take anything for granted in the short series.
“It kind of brings you back to [the Cubs of] 2015, and I think they’re just going out there and they’re gonna be excited to play,” Kyle Schwarber said. “You know, this is a whole new experience for pretty much all these individuals.”
